Dr. Helen E. Giannakopoulos serves as chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and associate dean for hospital affairs at UPMC. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, she served as associate professor clinician educator, residency program director, and academic chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Penn Dental Medicine.
A Chicago native, Dr. Giannakopoulos earned her undergraduate degree from Penn State University and her dental degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She returned to Pennsylvania to complete her medical degree at Drexel University, her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Allegheny General Hospital and her specialty certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Giannakopoulos is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She received the Daniel M. Laskin Award for the most outstanding paper published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2017 and the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2021.
